On my last few climbing trips to the southern Sierra, my eyes have been drawn like magnets to the imposing 14,000 foot bulk of Mt. The standard ascent route is the West Side Route, accessed from Shepherd's Pass. From the pass, one travels across the Williamson Bowl, which lies between Mount Williamson and Mount Tyndall, part of the Sierra Crest.The bowl is home to five high alpine lakes. Mt Williamson (4,384m, 36.65610N / 118.3103W) is the second highest peak in California and sixth in the contiguous USA, and lies about 10/15 kms to the north of Mt Whitney (the highest peak in California as well as in the contiguous USA).
