Hello fella, First a question, why moon shines? Here is a simple experiment to show you what we mean: stand about 6 feet in front of a bright electric light in a completely dark room (or outdoors at night) and hold in your hand a small round object such as a tennis ball or an orange. But it doesn't always look the same. The moon does not emit any light itself. The Sun’s light is reflected from the surface of the Moon to us.
Some other things create their own light so that they are their own light source (like the Sun). The Moon gets its light from the Sun, and moonlight is actually the Sun reflecting off the Moon (the Moon itself is a rock, not a light). We only see the Moon because sunlight reflects off of it. Reflected light is what we call "glare". However, Pluto is like the apple. In this situation the side of the moon facing the Earth is not able to reflect any light at all and appears dark.
We do not see things from light that is reflected.
If an object does not emit its own light (which accounts for most objects in the world), it must reflect light in order to be seen. Reflected light is always whatever color it was originally. Why do we see the moon because it reflects it light from the sun? Without reflected sunlight from the moon we are unable to see it. It rises with the sun and sets with the sun. Then comes a waxing gibbous moon, which is between half-full and full. When the moon lies between the Earth and the Sun, it is only the back side of the moon that is light by the Sun.
Sometimes the moon is completely lit, and other times it is completely dark. Because the positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun vary throughout the course of the month, the amount of the moon’s surface that we can see changes a little bit every night. Long exposure pictures in cities will reveal the orange skyglow, which is the main reason why you can't see the stars - it's like noise masking off the faint light from the distant objects: Light pollution affects primarily the observations of faint objects, such as nebulae or distant galaxies. But the light coming from the Moon is an illusion. As the sunlight that was illuminating the Moon disappears, so would the Moon!
The side facing the Earth is not receiving any sunlight. The same would go for the many other celestial bodies in the sky, such as planets, which we see only because of the Sun's reflected light. Reflected light bounces off of materials that for whatever reason cannot absorb the light. The phases of the moon are caused by its orbit around the Earth.
As you know, you’re actually seeing the reflected light from the Sun, bouncing off the Moon which acts like a mirror. The answer is simple and well known that moon shines because it reflects the light coming from sun. A really terrible mirror. The walls in the room that you are in do not emit their own light; they reflect the light from the ceiling "lights" overhead. As the moon orbits the Earth, we can see a different amount of the moon is lit by the sun from our perspective on Earth.
